Drum Majors

The Blugold Marching Band has a proud tradition of excellent drum majors who assist in running rehearsals and guiding the ensemble in performance. The drum majors act as the ‘face of the BMB’ and are charged with the responsibility of keeping rehearsals on track and Blugold spirit high.

Many BMB drum majors have held prestigious drum major or leadership/soloist positions in Drum & Bugle Corps including Bluecoats, Carolina Crown, Colts, The Cavaliers, Madison Scouts, and River City Rhythm.

Positions on the drum major team are competitive and are reserved for candidates who demonstrate the highest levels of performance, personal, and leadership quality.

What to Prepare:

  • Conduct a BMB Field Show Tune of your choice — we’ll have YouTube/speakers available at the audition

  • Conduct basic patterns at slow, medium, and fast tempos — 2/4, 3/4, 4/4

  • Demonstrate the ‘Call to Attention’

  • Marching 8 to 5, Forward and Backward, with ‘Pop-Step’ & Drum Major ‘Hands at Hips’

  • Interview with BMB Staff and Drum Major Evaluators

FIRST-YEAR MEMBERS: Drum Majors must have at least one year of experience as a member of the ensemble. Given the amount of instructional assistance and leadership required, it’s critical to have experience in the BMB prior to becoming a drum major. First-year members may audition to gain experience with the process.

To register for a drum major audition, notify Dr. Dickerson and Prof. Lofy at least one week ahead of the audition date, via email.
